From a young age, we are taught to work as a team. And that’s not just because our parents wanted us to get along with the other kids – it’s a natural way of life.
In the animal kingdom, many other species have been observed working as a team, with strong leadership. This is because it is what they need to do to not only survive, but to thrive.
This should be the ideology of any business owner.
Lions
Lions tend to hunt in groups, as a group can hunt more effectively by stalking the herd from several directions at once, encircling it.
They take positions in such a way that every member of the pride has something to do – there is no slacking.
They usually do their hunting cooperatively and work together as a team to bring down their prey, which has a much higher success rate than going at it alone.
Are you trying to do everything by yourself?
Canada Geese

The flying V formation is used by Canada Geese for migrating long distances.
If the leader at the apex of the V gets tired or sick, another goose will take its place.
This ability to rotate leadership shows how important it is, not only for leaders but for a whole team to be flexible and watch out for each other.
Do you have someone in your team who can step into your shoes if you need to step out the business, or take a back seat?
Honey Bees

Bees are often used as shining examples of teamwork in the animal kingdom; this isn’t without reason.
A hive of honey bees can consist of up to 60,000 bees.
Each bee has a specific job that contributes to the overall success of the hive.
What systems do you have in place to ensure each team member knows their role and what jobs they need to do?
Wolves

Everybody knows that wolves hunt and travel in packs, but wolves don’t just hunt and sleep together: they play together, too!
Wolves know that the team that plays together, stays together.
It’s important to bond with and genuinely like your team. Liking your team will make the tough times easier to get through. How bonded are you and your team?
These are just a few examples of how working as a team, and getting in well together, has meant the survival of many species in the wild.
But one of the biggest factors which makes a team successful, is communication. Read our blog on ‘Communication is the Key to Success’ to find out more.
