This isn’t a story about losing a client and sitting here feeling sorry for ourselves. It’s not about price wars or blaming anyone for making a decision they felt was right at the time.
This is a story about value. And more importantly, how business owners actually feel when they’re getting an accounting service that doesn’t match where they are in their business.
Because let’s be honest. Not all accountants are the same. And you really do get what you pay for.
How the Relationship Started
The client was a decent-sized limited company. When they first came to us, they weren’t in an easy position.
There was a pretty brutal HMRC investigation already underway. Tension was high. Stress was real. And the numbers didn’t look great on the surface.
We got involved, dug into the detail, and uncovered the truth. Around £300,000 of what had been assumed to be an issue wasn’t actually an issue at all. A lot of the historic work hadn’t been done properly, so we used the right levers to correct it and put things back on track.
From there, we rebuilt the foundations.
We sorted the accounts properly. We moved them onto a solid cloud accounting system. We systemised things as much as possible so it wasn’t all living in someone’s head.
And as always, we focused on pre year end tax planning. Not after the year end. Not when it’s too late to do anything meaningful. Before.
Because advice after the year end is only useful if you’ve got a time machine. And last time I checked, most business owners don’t have a DeLorean sitting outside.
When Cash Flow Gets Tight
Despite all of that good work, the business hit cash flow pressure.
That happens. Even good businesses go through tight periods. And when that happens, cost cutting often feels like the logical move.
So the client came to me and said he’d found someone cheaper.
Was I gutted? Yes. Of course I was. We’d done some really good work together and for me, these are personal relationships, not just transactions.
But I genuinely wished him well.
And here’s the interesting part.
It didn’t take long before he came knocking on our door again.
What Changed With the Cheaper Option
Within three or four months, things had unravelled.
He’d had accounts prepared, but there were no proper reconciliations. No real support. No proactive guidance. Company law compliance was shaky at best.
Most importantly, none of his questions were being answered.
And those questions weren’t random. They were directly linked to the stage his business was at. Growth decisions. Cash flow pressure. Tax exposure. Risk.
Instead, what he got was a transactional service. Numbers prepared. Boxes ticked. Deadlines met. But no thinking alongside him.
That’s the gap most business owners don’t realise exists until they fall into it.
Cheap Versus Valuable Are Not the Same Thing
We’ve never positioned ourselves as the cheapest. And we never will.
That’s not arrogance. It’s reality.
If you want a higher level of service, it has to be priced properly. There’s no way around that. Time, expertise, planning and proactive advice all cost money to deliver well.
What we focus on is:
• Giving advice before it’s too late to act
• Making sure everything is done cleanly and properly
• Avoiding penalties, mistakes and nasty surprises
• Answering the questions that actually matter to you
• Helping you make better decisions, not just file reports
That level of service creates clarity. And clarity reduces stress.
The Questions You Should Be Asking
If you’re comparing accountants purely on monthly fee, you’re missing the bigger picture.
Instead, ask yourself this:
Are they planning for you or just preparing numbers?
Is everything proactive or does it all happen at the deadline?
When you ask questions, do you get real answers or generic responses?
Is the advice tailored to where your business actually is right now?
Because saving a few hundred pounds a month can feel good in the short term.
But if that saving costs you ten or twenty thousand pounds in missed tax opportunities, inefficient structures, penalties or poor decisions, it’s a false economy.
You don’t just lose money. You lose time, focus and peace of mind.
What Good Accounting Really Buys You
The biggest benefit of paying the right amount for the right service isn’t the accounts themselves.
It’s headspace.
When your numbers are under control and someone is thinking ahead for you, you stop obsessing over problems. You stop firefighting.
Your attention goes back where it belongs.
On your business.
On your team.
On your customers.
On growth.
That’s how businesses move forward properly.
A Final Thought
At MDH, we build long-term relationships. Real partnerships.
It’s not about being the cheapest option on a comparison sheet. It’s about delivering the level of service that actually helps you move forward without unnecessary stress.
So if you feel like you’re paying for an accountant but not really getting advice, clarity or support, that’s worth paying attention to.
And if you want to talk through what that could look like for your business, book a call with me.
Sometimes the right conversation is worth far more than the cheapest quote.
