As we approach the end of the year, it feels like the perfect time to pause, reflect on how far we’ve come, and celebrate the wins – big and small. So today, I want to share my personal story of how I built MDH from scratch. It’s not just about the business milestones but also about the challenges, growth, and lessons learned along the way.
Taking the First Step...
It’s funny how vivid some memories stay with you. I can still remember the day in 2010 when I decided to take the leap. For years, I had worked in various accountancy firms, earned my ACCA qualification, and gained experience. But the dream of creating something of my own – something built around my ideas and vision – kept tugging at me.
So, I started MDH in the corner of my bedroom with a handful of clients and a head full of dreams. It was exciting, yes, but also terrifying. Giving up the safety of a steady salary felt like walking a tightrope. Luckily, I had a consulting job on the side, which gave me a safety net as I slowly built up the business. It wasn’t just about keeping the lights on; it gave me the space to figure things out – from finding clients to understanding marketing.
The Growth Begins
By 2011, it was time to take the next step – hiring my first employee and moving into a tiny serviced office. Looking back, that first hire was one of the scariest decisions I’ve ever made. What if I couldn’t pay her? What if I’d made the wrong choice? But I trusted my instincts, and thankfully, it worked out.
Those early years were all about pushing boundaries and hitting milestones that felt monumental at the time. A £100,000 turnover, hiring a second team member, and getting a steady flow of referrals – these were the wins that kept me going. It felt like we were building something real.
The Challenges Along the Way
Of course, not everything went smoothly. In 2013, I set my sights on buying our first proper office – a freehold property that needed a lot of work. Negotiating the deal was a rollercoaster, but eventually, we got the keys, and that shop became our home base.
Life also had its share of personal challenges. I’ll never forget 2014, the week we were preparing to open the new office. My wife and I suffered a miscarriage, and it turned our world upside down. But the business still needed me, so I plastered on a smile and showed up for the opening. Looking back, I realise how much that experience taught me about resilience – and the importance of giving yourself permission to feel and heal.
Learning to Let Go
Around 2016, I had a breakthrough moment that changed the way I worked. I discovered AVN, a network that introduced me to systems and procedures inspired by The E-Myth. These tools helped me step back from the day-to-day chaos and focus on the bigger picture.
I started delegating tasks, creating processes, and building a team that could run things without me micromanaging every detail. That shift was a game changer. It allowed me to focus on growing MDH and, more importantly, reclaim some balance in my life.
Celebrating Wins and Looking Ahead
Fast forward to today, and MDH has grown beyond what I imagined when I started 14 years ago. We’ve won awards, expanded our team, and achieved milestones I once thought were out of reach. But the wins aren’t just about numbers or trophies – they’re about the people.
Our team feels like a family, and some members have been with us for nearly a decade. Watching them grow from trainees into seasoned professionals is one of the things I’m most proud of. And on a personal note, becoming a dad has brought me more joy than I could have ever dreamed. Welcoming my daughter in 2019 and my son in 2023 has been the highlight of my life.
As we near the end of another year, it’s a chance to reflect. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that success isn’t just about ticking off goals – it’s about celebrating progress, overcoming challenges, and dreaming bigger.
What’s Next?
So, what’s next for MDH? The truth is, I’m still dreaming. There’s always another goal, another challenge, another mountain to climb. And yes, it’s a little scary, but it’s also incredibly exciting.
If you’re reflecting on your own journey as the year wraps up, I encourage you to take a moment to celebrate how far you’ve come. The challenges you’ve faced, the growth you’ve achieved – they’re all worth acknowledging.
